At Greek Island Activities.Com we fully support all young people and young adults and their
participation in activities that contribute to personal growth and development with a particular focus
on involving young people in experiences that will promote active healthy lifestyles. As a significant
contribution to this process we have teamed up with our local partners to offer a very unique range
of opportunities for young people involved in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award and The International
Award for Young People particularly the Gold Award Residentials and Expedition sections.
We can also provide input for other personal and social development schemes
We have organised 5 very unique and specific types of residential project weeks [shown below]
which will offer you a broad selection to choose from. In addition the experience of organising and
researching your travel to another country [Greece] and actually coming here will provide you with
the added benefits of diverse personal development opportunities that will compliment the whole
learning experience. If you wish you can also study the Greek language prior to your visit as this
will be very beneficial to your project. You will be guided through the weeks shown below by
qualified and friendly staff who have professional experience and qualifications in working with
young adults and the award scheme itself. This will ensure that your visit is safe, enjoyable and
relevant to your chosen activities and your personal development.
Week A - General Greek Experience Week.
This week is designed to allow you to get the feeling and experience of what it is like to live and
work in Greece and during the week you will participate in a range of activities, such as -
- Spend the morning or afternoon with the Mayor of Poros
-Assisting with teaching English to young Greek adults in Poros schools.
-Visit to the Greek Naval Academy
-Visiting the Greek Port Police and learning about their role and remit.
-Working in a Greek Hotel and learning about Greek food and cooking.
-Spending a day assisting a local nursery for young Greek children
-Spending a morning or afternoon with the local tourist Police and at the
local hospital in Galatas.
- Olive picking and traditional olive oil production [November and December]
Week B - Multi Activity Week
This week will provide you with involvement in 5 days of activities, based from our Odyssey Centre
- 3 days of sea kayaking
- 1 day mountain biking
- 1 day walking
All activity days will last approximately 6 hours, with evenings devoted to group exercises and
personal assessment of residential project criteria.
Depending on the time of year , participants may also be provided with a Greek cooking session
and some Greek language learning.
Please note this week is only suitable for groups of 4 or more. Individual participants can contact
us and we will try to allocate you a place with other similar independent young people
Week C - Production of a mountain bike and cycle guide to Poros Island
Poros is a fantastic place for walking and mountain - biking - cycling, unfortunately many of the
tracks and off road pathways are not shown on any current available map on the island. For this
week's activity participants will use existing maps and explore the island "joining up" mapped
routes with non mapped route, resulting tin the production of a Cycle - Mountain - Biking guide to
the Island.
Week D - Historical study of Poros churches.
The Island of Poros has approximately 24 churches, the majority of these are isolated and in semi
remote locations. For sometime visitors to the island of Poros ask many question about these
churches, but unfortunately there is no local database of all the islands churches. This project
week would spend the time visiting all these churches, researching, photographing and recording
as much information as possible. The end result would be the compilation of a small guide book
that could then be distributed to visitors to the island and would become a valuable resource for
the islands visitors.
Week E - Production of a walking guide to Poros Island.
The island of Poros is a haven for walkers, from coastal paths to more rugged off the beaten track
routes. The current map of Poros does not really to justice to the island's walking potential. For
those interested in this week you will study the available mapping information, walk all over the
island planning routes and mapping these, this will be followed up by the production of a
categorised walking guide to Poros island, which will then be used by future visitors to the island. A
